Personal Reading Goals For The First Quarter Of 2011

When I was a child, much of our quiet time in the evenings was spent playing family games or reading books.  I remember spending countless hours sitting on my bedroom floor, my back flat against the sideboards of my old and very high wooden bed, with my knees drawn up and a book propped on them.  Nothing was too long or too difficult for me back then; I loved to read, and was good at it.

As a mama, I still appreciate a well-written book, but now I find myself searching out ones that will help me grow and will ultimately add value to my family or spiritual life.  And, although I read quite often, this year I desire to be accountable, scheduled, and more intentional with my reading.

I'm hoping to read a minimum of two books per month in 2011, with the exception of this first quarter since I am reading my Bible through and it is requiring a significant time commitment.

My Reading Goals for 1st Quarter of 2011:

*Read through the entire Bible - I'm using my ESV Bible along with the 90 day reading plan that I shared in this post.

*Read Created to be His Help Meet by Debi Pearl - I began this one already and am really looking forward to getting further along in it!

*Read What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage by Paul Tripp - My husband is reading this book now and has really been enjoying it.  We'll be going through this one together.

*Read Honey for a Child's Heart by Gladys Hunt - I'm hoping for some inspiring words regarding the process of learning and possibly tools for homeschooling in this one.  I love the subtitle of the book: "The Imaginative Use of Books in Family Life."  Doesn't it sound like a wonderful resource?  Have you read this one already?

And, if I finish ahead of schedule, I may begin Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours or perhaps Organizing Your Day and attempt to get a head start on the second quarter :)

For some of my absolutely favorite books of all time, be sure to visit the Bubbling Brook store.

What books are you reading this year, ladies?  Do you have any recommendations for me?

  1. In this season my reading also is centered around my Bible and in growing the roles of this season of my life.

My first 2 books for 2011 are the Fix It and Forget Cookbook (I've wanted to take a look through one for quite some time) and Age of Opportunity by Tripp, as I have children on the brink of leaving childhood for those teen years, and I so want to embrace these years for all they can be.

  2. Jaime,
I too love to read. I have a passion for instilling this into my children. I try to mix up my reading I have my bible study (Elizabeth George series right now and working through the book of psalms), books that inspire spiritually, and some good classics. I participate in What's On Your NIghtstand? to find some great inspiration. I used to post this on my Titus 2 Womans blog but felt it was distracting form the real reason I began that blog, to inspire women to live out the scripture. So this past week I started a seperate blog that my children and I are working on Our Homestead Book Reviews (you can get there through my wordpress username). Come visit us!

  3. These are wonderful suggestions, and I think early darkness and cold nights make for an especially good time to read. I just read an excellent book by Jeff Manion, called The Land Between. Really a good read!

Thanks for sharing these on Marriage Mondays. I'd like to read the marriage books by Debi and Paul.

    Blessed reading,
    Julie

  4. @Michelle, I may need to look into the Fix it and Forget it cookbook myself! :)

@Monica, I'm not familiar with What's On Your Nightstand; is it a web site? Sounds useful!

  5. I love to read and have loved it ever since I was a little girl! I have heard that "Honey For A Child's Heart" is a good book, though I haven't read it.

I have several books that I haven't read yet, and I really just need to resolve to read them, as you have. Thanks for linking up to Making Your Home Sing Monday!

  6. Jaime, I loved Created to be His Helpmeet. It's one of those books that makes you laugh and cry at the same time. So much truth!!!

I want to be more intentional in my reading this year as well. I don't know if I can do two books a month, but would like to. ;-)

    My warmest regards,

    Jasmine

  8. I REALLY want to read Created to Be His Helpmeet, I just can't ever find it used, and its $$$ new! I might end up buying it new because I have wanted it for a couple years now. I am also GOING to read the Bible through before the end of the year. Well I am cheating because I read about 1/4 of it last year and I am not rereading that part.

  9. I have a very loved copy of "Honey for a Child's Heart". It's the book that I refer to over and over again when I need reading inspiration for the kids.

Also have "Fix it and Forget It" (not sure which edition). There are GOBS of crock-pot recipes arranged categorically, so it's easy to find what I want. I've never been disappointed in the taste/outcome of a recipe out of this book. However, alot of the recipes tend to lean heavily on canned soups and other processed foods, so just be prepared to do a bit of tweaking if you are approaching it from a whole foods standpoint.

I'm trying to finish several books I have started...I've got about 15 stacked on my nightstand right now! :) (mostly about nutrition, parenting, and spiritual growth- I also like to make my reading time count with something that adds to my family's well-being)
