One Little Thought For Married Mamas ~

Sometimes life gets busy and the days fly by, then we fall into bed exhausted at night, praying that we get the rare treasure of a full night's sleep.

It's part of the blessing of being a mama, kind of like the tiniest thorn in the most beautiful bouquet of roses.

One thing we should be cautious of as busy mamas, though, is that we don't neglect the needs of our husbands... the daddy of those precious little ones.

Sometimes I forget that my God-given role is to help him, and not vice-versa.  I am his helpmate.

And so, one small way that I try to help him is by finding specific times to willingly offering him my undivided attention.  It's one simple way that I can show him that I love and respect him.  Most nights, I try to go to bed about the same time he does.

Why do I do this?

Because I remember as a young, engaged woman the anticipation that I felt, knowing that one day soon I would be able to go to bed with the man I loved each night and wake up with him each morning.  Oh, how I looked forward to that!  I dreamed of the intimate conversations we'd have, heads on our pillows, smiling and laughing as we reminisced about the day's happenings.  I could hardly wait for those evenings!

And so, still today (nearly 11 years later!), I try to continue to fan that same flame and look forward to our quiet time together in the evenings.  The kids are put to bed between 8:00 and 8:30, usually no later.  We spend a few solo minutes reading a chapter in a book or checking emails, maybe posting a quick note to the blog or facebook, but then I remember...

We need our special "pillow talk" time together.  And I still look forward to going to bed with the man I love every night and waking up with him each morning!

What do *you* do to focus on your husband, giving him a little extra attention?

  1. Hey Jaime,
Thanks for posting! My husband and I have been married for 10 years, and it's sometimes hard to remember the little things I could do to keep us closer. Last week we were on vacation and I made a commitment that for that week to go to bed every night at the same time as he did. It was awesome how much more talking we did and how much closer we were!
Now that we're back into the swing of things at home, I know I need to make more of an effort to hit the hay the same time as him to keep that little something special present.
    Thanks for the reminder!

PS- you don't know me! I'm friends with Jen. =)

  2. @Dana ~ So good to hear that you did that over vacation! And congrats on ten years ;)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I have made the goal of going to bed at the same time as my husband this year, and even when life seems to be getting us down, going to bed at the same time is definitely nice and helps keep us on the same page--on the same team as it were. :)

  4. Wise words! We'll be married 20 years next week - and it's been a very special time for us both. I've also made it a habit to get up early and make sure he has a good breakfast every morning and pack his lunch before he leaves for work. Those little sacrifices show him how important he is to me!

  5. What a good reminder! I'm about to be a mommy for the first time, and I'm sure some big changes are in store for us as a family. It is important that I always remember my first role as my husband's help meet. He's so important to me, and I never want to neglect to have time with him each evening.

  6. What a good reminder. Thank you!

This my first time here, and I will certainly be back.

Under His sun and by His grace,

  7. It really is a good habit, going to bed at the same time. That's what we've done for 23 years and I will continue to do so. And rising at the same time, I put off getting ready for the day, so I can be free to help him with whatever he needs before he leaves in the morning.

A little surprise this week, I sent him a text message, to let him know I was praying for him on a difficult day, and he later said the circumstances that were so daunting, seemed to disappear, after reading that text. I think I'll do that every now and then, keeps us as "one" even when we are apart.

  8. Thanks for this reminder! :-)

  12. Hi Jaime: I couldn't agree more! My husband and I have always gone to bed at the same time for just this reason. It is a precious time together to relax, laugh, and connect.
